Rip Offs Alert: The Cramming Sweepstakes Scam
By Shelley Lockwood
Cramming and scamming.....notice the similarity?
This scam goes like this. You get an entry form for a sweepstakes. On it you fill in all of your details. Of course you'd like family and friends to have a chance to win. So they're kind enough to allow you to enter on behalf of others as well.
You simply fill in their details, and voila they have a chance of winning.
Then comes the phone bill with an extra charge of $4.95/ month. Funny thing is, family and friends are getting billed too.
On the back of that sweepstakes entry form was this little tiny fine print. You signed yourself up, and others for a monthly voice mail service to be charged on your telephone bill.
It's estimated that victims lost more than $2,000,000.00 to this scam.
It's also thought that many victims didn't even realize they were being crammed. With telephone bills becoming increasingly crowded and more confusing, some just figured it was a charge for a service from their telephone company itself. Some didn't notice the charge at all.
Make sure you read everything, front, back, top, bottom especially the fine print before submitting a free entry form into anything.
