Credit Card Scam Alert: Tactics Explained
By Shelley Lockwood
Platinum Card Scam
There's the one notifying you that you're approved to receive a platinum card.
You send them an activation fee of $200.00, your bank account information and they send you a card.....not a credit card however, a platinum card that enables you to purchase from a junk filled catalog.
If that's not bad enough, you can only purchase the junk by putting down the money first. Before you know it some miscellaneous service or other will be being charged to your "platinum card".
Pre-approved credit card scam
Then there's the one notifying you that you've been pre-approved for a Visa or Mastercard, with a guaranteed high limit. They reassure you that you qualify regardless of your past credit history.
Using various methods, sometimes forms, sometimes via a telephone number, they have you give them your financial information. The information they request is as detailed as your bank account number, your bank's name and routing number as well as your next check number.
They tell you that they will deduct a one time activation or membership fee from your account. It's not bad enough that the credit card doesn't exist in the first place, they repeatedly withdraw the so called fee from your bank account.
Mail Interception Scams
As if the false pre-approved credit card scams aren't enough, you need to be wary of legitimate pre-approved credit card notifications being sent to you.
Why? Well, because if you aren't careful about how you dispose of them you may find yourself in for a shock when you receive a hefty overdue bill from the credit card company.
Someone just may be kind enough to respond to the offer on your behalf, and with a quick change of address have a credit card in your name at their disposal.
The next time you receive that pre-approved credit card notification, make sure you tear it up very carefully before tossing it.
Take care,
Shelley
