email Scam Alert: e-Cards Delivering More than You Bargained For
By Shelley Lockwood
Great now we even have to worry about receiving e-cards online! What started out as a genuine viral marketing effort now takes a turn for the worst.
Many sites offer free e-cards, why? Free exposure, over and over and over again. Their name and website spreads and it doesn't cost them a thing. Viral marketing at it's greatest.
As with anything else online, it didn't take the slimes long to start taking advantage.
Now e-cards, which I happen to love aren't necessarily all that safe to receive.
There's the Trojan horse program dubbed "Cytron" that you can unknowingly download. You receive what appears to be an e-card greeting, you go to retrieve it and you grab the plug in to supposedly view your e-card. What happens next? You get bombarded with nasty adult pop ups.
Then there's the greeting card site that decided to slide some real interesting fine print hidden quite well within their two end user license agreements. Like we all take the time to read through those agreements before proceeding. So to view their e-card again you need to get the viewer, while getting it you quickly click "I agree" to the agreements, and before you know it you've just agreed to have them send junk mail to everyone in your address book.
If those two aren't bad enough, how about the latest method of installing spyware on an unsuspecting person's computer? That's right, now you can purchase a spyware and have it delivered and installed under the guise of sending a sweet and loving e-card.
I shrug my shoulders, shake my head in dismay and wonder yet again, why these people do the things they do and.....if and/or when it will ever stop!
Take care,
Shelley
